Inspiration
As college students, not having a sleep schedule is not unheard of. Needing to tough out through some working days due from studying until late for exams, completing projects and balancing with extracurriculars for 3-4 hours of sleep is unfortunately quite an acceptable norm, and sometimes our sheer willpower is not enough to hop out of the bed. By gamifying and socializing the process of waking up through our app, we hope to make it an exciting part of the day, rather than just a dreadful chore. Adding a little spice to the process along with your friends will hopefully help set a more energetic tone and give them the extra push of motivation to conquer the day ahead.
What it does
This app allows each person to join friend circles using codes. These friend circles are the basis of what allows people to choose songs for each other to wake up to. Each day before midnight everyone in a particular circle would be assigned a random friend in the same circle to choose a song for the next day that they will wake up to and a challenge that they would have to complete in order to stop the song when they do wake up. The next morning, based on the time of the person’s alarm, the song that was chosen by another friend would play until the person completes the challenge that was set by them. This would enforce that the person is woken up by the time they do complete the challenge. They would also have an opportunity to post a picture of their morning activity within 3 hours of waking up, which will give them bonus points. Ranking of friends will be based on their scores, which is determined by how fast they complete their morning challenge and whether they do perform other optional challenges.
How we built it
We used Figma to create a vision for how we’d want our app to look like, and the features we’d want to include to help gamify the process of waking up. Choosing a bright color scheme was key to set the tone for motivating someone to get out of their bed.
Challenges we ran into
A huge challenge for us was in the beginning where we had to come up with a feasible system for “gamifying” and “socializing” a task that is rather personal. Coming up with a process that was stimulating without becoming a hindrance/burden to a person required careful consideration and planning. This task, although something all of us do, is hard to make fun and effective at the same time. While we did have some roadblocks in that aspect, we were able to overcome them by doing research on what goes in to waking up, brainstormed multiple ideas to make it fun, and shortlisted some of them to incorporate into our app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to come up with a unique idea for our app and build a full-fledged prototype that provides a detailed understanding of how our app works in the real world. This prototype, created in Figma, will give us a great wireframe to begin with, making it much easier to implement our app.
What we learned
We learned the process of creating an app, which starts with brainstorming and wireframing. During this hackathon, we explored deeply on designing and prototyping a mobile app. From the color theme of the app to the functionality of how our app should work, we were able to put in enough research to understand what choices would best fit our app.
What's next for WakeMe App
Our next step would be implementing the front end and back end of our mobile application. We would hope to do this in Swift, since the language is compatible with iOs. As we implement our app, we expect the app to have minor visual and functional changes, but the overall picture would stay the same.
