Inspiration

We noticed that waiting time — like during car washes — is often wasted and frustrating. While AI apps exist, they are passive and require users to think about what to ask. We wanted to create an AI that understands context (waiting) and actively guides users to make that time valuable.

What it does

WaitWise AI is a voice-first AI assistant designed for people waiting during services like car washes. Users simply tap and speak, and the AI responds with personalized, time-aware interactions such as: Learning short English phrases Playing quick quizzes or games Guided relaxation Casual conversation The system adapts to the user’s available time and provides a structured, engaging experience instead of passive waiting.

How we built it

We built a lightweight, voice-first web application using: Frontend: Simple web UI (mobile-first) Speech-to-Text: Browser Web Speech API AI Brain: LLM via API (OpenRouter / OpenAI) Text-to-Speech: ElevenLabs for natural voice output Realtime Layer: Agora for voice communication integration Flow: User speaks Speech is transcribed AI generates response Converted to natural voice Played back to user

Challenges we ran into

Handling voice latency within a short hackathon timeframe Balancing real-time interaction vs system complexity Designing AI responses to be short, engaging, and time-aware Integrating multiple services (voice + AI + frontend) quickly

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a working voice AI interaction within 24 hours Created a context-aware AI experience (not just chatbot) Delivered a smooth demo with real voice interaction Successfully integrated sponsor technology into the solution

What we learned

Simplicity wins in hackathons — demo matters more than complexity Voice UX design is very different from text-based AI Context-aware AI creates much better user experience Real-time systems require careful latency management
