Inspiration

Many people nowadays consume news from digital media without really knowing the truth behind the news. We think the main reason why this is happening is people are constantly on move. So fact checking could be a chore to do even they skeptical at that moment.

What it does

We create a platform where you can get news you are interested and fact checking contributed by the community. We call this platform "WaitWat". We want to help those people who has what so called "WaitWat" moment, to know more about the news they currently reading.

How we built it

We used a few API from Rakuten RapidAPI below.

  • NewsAPI - Content provider for the news
  • Article Data Extraction and Text Mining - To grab the content of news to serve it from our app
  • Hoaxy - Claims and fact checking spread visualization

As for the app, we use Nuxt powered by Firebase to create a mobile UI for better user experience.

Challenges we ran into

Some API provided by Rakuten RapidAPI was lacking in documentation. It was time consuming to look for the correct way to use the API.

Accomplishments that we are proud of

We managed to piece together our idea and manage our team work really well although some of us just met on this event. We also managed to finish the showcase prototype with good balance in work and rest.

What we learned

Most of us learn new tech stack that we never been able to get into before. It was a great and eye-opening experience for us. We also do a lot of pair programming to increase each other capability in a whole as a developer.

What's next for WaitWat

We really hope that our product could change how news revolves around society and makes people more aware about fact-checking in general.
