Inspiration
When reading about President Biden's Covid-19 Relief Plan, the Stimulus Check Plan he provided led us to explore the wage gap problem and its tremendous detrimental effects on the American economy. Income Inequality has been shown to have higher rates of health and social problems, lower rates of social goods, lower happiness, and unfortunately, Covid-19 has seriously worsened income inequalities. More than 20.6 million jobs have been lost due to the pandemic. This led us to coming up with our idea for our website to address the wage gap problem.
What it does
Our website first provides awareness about the wage gap problem and gives basic information about its negative effects on the home page. The home page leads to the sign up and log in buttons, which allow for an adult or student to create an account under Wage Watchers. Once they have created an account, they have access to 2 new pages. The first page is the "Receive Checks" Page, which first provides information about Biden's Stimulus Check Plan and who is eligible for receiving the check. The user is then prompted to "Apply to Receive Monthly Stimulus Checks" and if they fall under Biden's targeted group, they are allowed to apply to receive a check. Credit card information, the applicant's address, number of children, marital status, phone number, and account information is asked on this form. Once the applicant has successfully applied, a confirmation code will be sent to the user's phone number. This "checks" program will aid Biden's plan and aims to effectively mitigate the wage gap. The second page that users can access is the "Opportunities" page, which is applicable to both adults and minors. This page provides a list of opportunities based on age that will help poor families earn more money. It provides a list of jobs and scholarships that apply to all ages. It provides information about the opportunities, as well as a link to those websites.
How We Built It
We built this website on the online platform "repl.it," using mostly HTML, CSS, and some Javascript. Additionally, Twilio was used to send the verification code to the provided phone number.
Challenges We Ran Into
Some of the challenges we ran into were time management. Some of the ideas we had in the beginning didn't make it to the final product. For example, we wanted to add a chat box on the homepage and were even able to implement the concept. However, it did not end up looking how we expected and we felt like it was a waste of time, since the linking involved also didn't work out. Another example of an idea that didn't make the cut was a "Forgot password?" page. One of our members made the file early on, but was unable to finish up the section. They ended up taking it out. On top of issues with time, we ran into a lot of problems with linking. A lot of the error-handling was tedious, time-consuming, and confusing due to the number of lines in each file. Some of the button alignment took longer than putting in actual content.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Some accomplishments I'm proud of are the fact that we were able to stay on task throughout the entire day. Within the first half hour, our team already decided what topic and what ideas we had for our site. Once we had our vision, we just needed to simply bring it to life. I was really proud of the final result after our consistent work on perfecting each component of our site. For example, the buttons took an extremely long time to fix and when they were done, they ended up looking great, bringing gratification to our team members.
What We learned
We learned to look at websites from the perspective of the creator rather than the user/consumer. This project taught us a lot about design and how long it really takes to make your ow website regardless of the level of expertise you have. We learned how exactly to manage our time well and figured out what we should and shouldn't keep, depending on the relevance to put topic.
What's next for Wage Watchers
Next, we plan to link the user's account to a bank account so that we are able to successfully give them money. Additionally, we plan to allow for users to put their childrens' information and Social Security Numbers so that they can receive money as well. Lastly, we would like to address the gender wage gap next.
