🌱 Inspiration

We were inspired by the staggering fact that restaurants lose 4–10% of their revenue to food waste every year. We realized waste wasn’t just hurting the environment—it was silently draining profits. Our goal was to build a tool that makes waste visible, measurable, and recoverable in real time.

💡 What It Does

WagaWaste-Watch helps restaurants: • Track inventory and waste in real time • Receive automatic alerts when waste levels spike or stock runs low • Use AI-driven predictive ordering to reduce overstocking • Generate daily reports and automatic refunds tied to waste costs • Access a user-friendly dashboard for staff, managers, and suppliers

🛠️ How We Built It • Frontend: React for a responsive, mobile-ready dashboard • Backend: Node.js + Express for API logic and integrations • Database: PostgreSQL with structured schemas for suppliers, inventory, and waste logs • Analytics: Predictive models for smarter inventory planning • Payments: Integration for automated cost recovery and refunds • Infrastructure: Docker containers and CI/CD pipelines for fast deployment

⚡ Challenges We Ran Into • Ensuring data reliability with staff-friendly logging tools • Handling real-time updates across multiple users without slowing the system • Designing flexible integrations with different supplier and payment systems • Driving staff adoption—making the tool easy and fast enough to use during busy service hours

🏆 Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of • Built a full-stack system that connects the dots from inventory → waste → payments • Developed AI-powered ordering recommendations based on historical usage • Created an intuitive dashboard that both managers and frontline staff can use • Modeled potential savings of over $100k per restaurant per year

📚 What We Learned • Waste management is as much a behavioral challenge as a technical one • Automation drives adoption—if logging is fast and reports are automatic, staff will use it • Data quality is the foundation for AI-powered insights • Building for restaurants means prioritizing speed, clarity, and usability
