Inspiration
Our inspiration came from discovering just how many species are endangered, including some names that we originally thought to be least concerned including several species of whales, the tiger, and the chimpanzee.
What it does
Our project is a Google Chrome extension that highlights the factors contributing to the labeling of whales as an "endangered" species, which will hopefully increase awareness about issues that might not be as well known, especially to people living far away from the source of the problem.
How we built it
We coded the extension using JavaScript, CSS, and HTML. Our graphic elements were created with Vectornator, a graphic design software that allowed us to create our own vector images for use in our extension.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we faced would have to be the incorporation of graphic elements into code, since we created all of it ourselves, as well as learning how to move our whale sprite using JavaScript. It was also something that we weren't very familiar with. As a result, we were only able to create one backdrop.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
On a similar note, the graphics portion was our greatest accomplishment. Much of the code also had to be learned throughout the process since we decided to try out something new.
What's next for Wacky the Whale: Waste Warning!
As mentioned, we spent much of the time figuring out the graphic elements of our project. We had originally hoped to include more engaging aspects to the extension instead of simply just having facts displayed. For example, this would've been a minigame that would involve trash piling up in the ocean, and the user having to click/remove the trash in order to keep the whale happy, or even changing up the animations to include other sprites with their own movement. Another thing we could add to this project would be several other backdrops and animals, since the endangered species problem extends much farther than whales, which we just chose due to preference:) This would likely take a lot less time since we already figured everything out the first time, though the images would still have to be created by hand.
