About the Project
We Are Behind You
Inspiration
The inspiration for our project came from the increasing number of unsafe situations faced by people, especially women, students, and travelers. In many emergencies, victims may not have enough time to call for help or explain their situation. We wanted to create a simple and fast safety solution that could provide immediate support with just one tap. Our goal was to make people feel safer and never feel alone during dangerous situations.
What Our Project Does
We Are Behind You is an AI-assisted personal safety application designed to help users during emergencies. The app includes:
One-tap SOS emergency alert
Live GPS location sharing
Google Maps location link generation
Emergency SMS alerts to multiple trusted contacts
Safe Route Planner with risky area detection
Alarm and warning notifications in dangerous zones
Automatic audio and evidence recording
“Reached Home Safe” confirmation feature
The app focuses on quick response, preventive safety, and reliable communication.
How We Built It
We built our prototype using MIT App Inventor. We used different components such as:
Location Sensor for GPS tracking
Texting Component for emergency SMS alerts
Clock Component for timed multi-contact messaging
Notifier and Sound Components for alerts and alarms
We designed the app interface with simple buttons so that users can access emergency features quickly during stressful situations.
Challenges We Faced
During development, we faced several technical challenges:
Sending SMS to multiple contacts at the same time
Generating a proper Google Maps location link
Handling Android SMS restrictions
Detecting risky areas using live GPS location
Managing real-time alerts and notifications
We solved these issues by using timer-based SMS delivery, proper GPS coordinate formatting, and distance-based location monitoring.
What We Learned
This project taught us many important skills, including:
