Inspiration

Like many people, I struggle with doomscrolling and what people often call “brain rot.” Whenever I open apps like TikTok, YouTube Shorts, or X, I often tell myself I will only stay for a few more minutes, but I end up losing much more time than I intended. I realized that willpower alone was not enough to break the cycle.

For the Quality of Life hackathon theme, I wanted to build something practical that could actually help. Instead of creating a rigid website blocker that people can easily ignore or bypass, I chose to use gamification and intentional friction. I tied my digital habits to the survival of a virtual pixel bunny, so that each time I keep scrolling, I am reminded that my choices have consequences.

The goal is to create a small wake-up call that helps me snap back to reality before I lose too much time.

How It Works

The bunny follows a simple progression: It starts calm. After some time, it changes animation. When you stay too long, it warns you that you are close to hurting it. If you continue, it gets hurt several times. After enough hurt ticks, it dies and a centered popup tells you to leave the site and take a break. If you leave and come back too soon, the extension can keep blocking you until enough cooldown time has passed.

Note

For the purpose of this short demonstration, the extension is running in 'Debug Mode' where the time scale is sped up (minutes are reduced to seconds). This allows you to see the full progression of the pet's warnings and the penalty loop in under a minute!
