Inspiration
As highschool students ourselves, we ourselves know the pain of losing track of all your tabs, or forgetting the names of super helpful resources when you desperately need them. This gave us the idea to make a sort of master document with helpful resources for every class that you may encounter in highschool, and even college. Having this huge hub of materials in the palm of your hand will eliminate the stress of having to find reliable and useful sources for all your classes each time you need help.
What it does
It is an interactive website which contains various resources for one’s educational needs.
How we built it
We built this platform using HTML/CSS and for small parts of the website (like the buttons), we used Bootstrap 4.
Challenges we ran into
We started using w3schools to see how our code would turn out, and programmed four different pages for the homepage, AP classes page, study advice, and safe space, but didn’t know how to combine the four pages into a fully functioning webpage, since w3schools doesn’t allow you to connect multiple files to each other. So we had to ask a mentor on what to do, which he suggested we used Replit instead and create multiple files, copy-paste each page into a different file, and use internal links in the button code and then it started working! Another challenge was that when we pressed the buttons afterwards, only the AP Classes button was working, and later on as me and my mentor went through my code, we realized we had to have the same code for the buttons throughout the four files, so then we copied and pasted the code for the buttons, replacing the previous code for them in the files. The website worked perfectly afterwards.
Additionally, another issue we faced was just figuring out what exactly we wanted to do. When given such an ambiguous request, there was an initial block when deciding which issue we wanted to attempt solving. However, after a lot of consideration, we ended up building something that we know could help many students just like us, and can be improved as time goes on.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re particularly proud of the way our program came together through Repl.it; seeing the website finally come to life with the help of our mentor was extremely rewarding. While the problems we ran into did prove challenging, overcoming them despite not having extensive experience in coding reminded us there is always a solution in programming.
What we learned
We learned how to combine the components of our website into a fully functioning and accessible page. Being introduced to Repl.it’s IDE was a game changer in this sense, and we saw first hand the far-reaching potential Classroom SAS has in our society, especially among our generation. The wide range of languages and collaboration capabilities are features we look forward to developing our program with.
What's next for Classroom SAS
Taking our project to the next level, we are actively considering recruiting volunteers to provide their input for different classes and expand our overall platform to be more personal and inclusive for students of different backgrounds. We understand the stress that often accompanies students throughout the week, juggling school with other aspects of daily life; including an online tutoring chat with available interns/volunteers would transform Classroom SAS into a multipurpose resource that is easy to navigate, without the trouble of keeping dozens of bookmarks and study guides saved onto your device. Graphic design is also a factor we’re building upon, as we grow our website to attract more individuals and assist them in academic success.
