Inspiration
We think one of the key factors that discourages women from pursuing STEM is that there isn't enough female representation in STEM. Therefore, we think it will be really helpful if we create a website that connect prospect females with the experienced and successful females in STEM programs and industries.
On a more personal note, we are hugely inspired by Pearl Sullivan, a former dean of Waterloo Engineering. Sullivan was the first woman to hold the position of dean of Waterloo Engineering and just the fifth woman across Canada to head a school of engineering. We believe that Ms. Sullivan must have gone through many gender-based challenges before she got to where she was. And we hope that our project will make it easier for young females to follow Sullivan's path in the near-distant future.
What it does
It allows females who are curious or interested in STEM to learn about different STEM programs available. It also allows females to connect with successful females in STEM industries.
How we built it
We used VS Code, the React app, and Node.js
Challenges we ran into
We have limited proficiency with Node and React, which made it really hard for us to implement our ideas.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we have successfully developed an organized structure of the website in a short amount of time.
What we learned
We learned the fundamental knowledge about how to code a websites, as well as necessary time management skills.
Business aspect
It is relatively hard for us to further develop this tiny project into a giant software but we believe that we will be able to create some unique features in the future, driven by our aspirations to bring about changes. These features will be something that users have never seen before. And we hope that a big tech company would acquire our little project, that is our current vision about the future of this project.
What's next for W>INKED!
We will continuously add more features to the website, including detailed information about successful female models in STEM and information about STEM programs. We will also implement direct message functions that would facilitate communication between users.
