Inspiration
As a first-gen Canadian, I saw how my parents experienced difficulty navigating the financial system. I also recognized that gig-workers were commonly immigrants. Our solution is inspired to solve the issues my parents experienced for people looking to build their financial future through gig work. We also recognized that there are other excluded groups that can also be supported with our product, including women, those with language barriers, and the LGBTQ community.
What it does
Our product is twofold. It offers a credit scoring alternative determined holistically using a Bayesian framework with psychological facets, financial details, and freelance rating as input parameters. We also offer a credit building card to gig workers.
How we built it
For the hackathon, we used Figma to prototype the user experience for the product. In production, we hope to use cloud technologies to run our algorithms. From my skillset, I would use Python and R to build and train the algorithm, however, steps must be taken for our product to scale globally.
Challenges we ran into
Communication as a team, small initial team size (1 person for about half of the hackathon), available data and market research
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Prototype, idea generation
What we learned
Gig workers also experience financial difficulties, communication in teams is crucial to avoid redundant work
What's next for Vyro: An Alternative Credit Solution for Gig Workers
In the future, we hope to begin building the algorithm to train and test our model. We also aim to reach out to startup accelerators to refine and scale our product.
