VYAMIT AI – YOUR VOICE-FIRST BUSINESS PARTNER

INSPIRATION

India has more than 40 million small retailers and wholesalers, including kirana stores, hardware shops, pharmacies, bakeries, dairy stores, stationery shops and clothing stores. Many of these businesses still depend on handwritten registers, calculators and manual billing.

We observed that shopkeepers spend a significant amount of time managing bills, calculating GST, checking stock, maintaining customer records and tracking transactions. Existing digital solutions can be difficult to operate for people who are more comfortable speaking than typing, especially in their native languages.

We wanted to make business digitalisation simpler, more affordable and accessible. This inspired us to build Vyamit AI (Vyapaar Mitra AI), an AI-powered business assistant that allows shopkeepers to manage their businesses through natural voice conversations.

Our vision is simple: every shopkeeper should be able to manage their business as easily as having a conversation.

WHAT IT DOES

Vyamit AI is a voice-first AI billing and business management platform designed for India's retail and wholesale ecosystem.

Instead of navigating complicated menus or manually entering information, shopkeepers can simply speak to Vyamit AI in Hindi, Marathi, English and other supported Indian languages.

Voice-Based Billing: Create bills by speaking product names and quantities without manually typing each item.
Automatic Calculations: Calculate product prices, quantities, totals and GST automatically, reducing manual effort and calculation errors.

HOW WE BUILT IT

We designed Vyamit AI around a voice-first architecture that converts everyday conversations into meaningful business actions.

The application follows a structured pipeline:

Voice Input: The shopkeeper speaks a command in a supported language.
Speech Recognition: The audio is converted into text using speech recognition.
AI Understanding: The AI interprets the user's intent, identifies products, quantities and relevant business information.
Business Logic: The backend processes the request, performs calculations, validates information and executes the required operation.
Database Operations: Product details, inventory, customer records, transactions and billing information are stored and retrieved.
Response Generation: The system generates a response and communicates the result through voice or the application interface.
Bill Delivery: The generated bill can be shared digitally or printed through a compatible printer.

Our application uses Flutter for the mobile experience, React and TypeScript for the web interface, and FastAPI for backend services. PostgreSQL/Supabase manages structured business data, while Redis supports caching and OTP-related operations. We also use AI services for language understanding and conversational processing, with vector-based retrieval capabilities for relevant information.

A major focus throughout development has been connecting AI conversations with reliable business operations. The AI does not simply respond to questions; it helps perform practical tasks such as creating bills, checking stock and retrieving customer information.

CHALLENGES WE RAN INTO

Building a voice-first business assistant for Indian retailers presented several challenges.

Indian Language Understanding: Understanding different accents, speaking styles and multilingual conversations required careful handling of speech recognition and language processing.
Local Quantity Expressions: Expressions such as "Dedh Kilo" and "Ek Paav" needed to be interpreted correctly and converted into usable quantities.
Accurate Billing: The system needed to handle product prices, quantities, totals and GST calculations reliably.
Product and Inventory Matching: Identifying the correct product when users speak naturally, especially when product names are similar, was challenging.
Voice-to-Action Reliability: Converting an unstructured voice command into the correct structured business operation required coordination between AI processing and backend validation.
Affordable Hardware Integration: Supporting accessible thermal printers while keeping the overall solution affordable for small businesses required practical testing.

We addressed these challenges through iterative development, testing, validation and feedback from actual shopkeepers.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS WE ARE PROUD OF

We are proud to have developed a functional Vyamit AI prototype with voice-based billing and business management capabilities.

One of our biggest achievements is taking the idea beyond a presentation and testing it in real business environments.

WHAT WE LEARNED

Building Vyamit AI taught us that developing a useful AI product involves much more than integrating a language model.

We learned how to connect speech recognition, natural language understanding, backend business logic, databases and real-world hardware into a complete workflow.

We also learned that AI solutions for India must account for regional languages, local expressions, affordability and the actual working habits of users.

Most importantly, feedback from shopkeepers showed us that technology is valuable only when it solves a genuine problem and makes everyday work easier.

This experience helped us understand the importance of building AI systems that are practical, reliable, accessible and designed around real users.
