What it does
Vroomy is an all-in-one, AI-powered app designed to ease the hustle and bustle of shared living, helping roommates turn their dorm into a true home. The name Vroomy is a play on “virtual” and “roomie,” reflecting its role as a virtual roommate assistant that simplifies life for college students.
Inspiration
We primarily target undergraduate students, many of whom are experiencing shared living for the first time. We understand that college is a major adjustment—and that setting boundaries or advocating for personal space can be difficult. Vroomy makes it easier.
By syncing with each roommate’s class schedule, Vroomy automatically creates personalized timeslots for showering, getting ready, and even scheduling “alone time.” Users can also manually adjust their slots, while the app’s built-in fairness algorithm rotates priority, ensuring everyone gets a chance to “pick first.”
So how does it work? Each roommate uploads a screenshot of their schedule and our AI machine analyzes it generating a shared calendar in which members can view available slots.
In terms of competitors, Vroomy stands out for its all-in-one functionality. While tools like Google Calendar or group chats allow roommates to communicate their schedules, they often fall short in coordination and usability. These platforms require constant manual updates, back-and-forth messaging, and still leave room for confusion.
Vroomy eliminates the busy work. By integrating scheduling, communication, and fairness algorithms into a single platform, it automates the most frustrating parts of shared living. Instead of juggling multiple apps or trying to interpret messy group chats, users can rely on Vroomy to handle scheduling conflicts, rotation systems, and reminders seamlessly—all in one place.
Challenges we ran into
We built Vroomy using the AWS tools we learned throughout the summit. For example, we mainly used Amazon Q on Visual Studio Code to help develop our app. Throughout the process, we faced many challenges trying to effectively prompt engineer to ensure that the app was what we intended. A big part of this process was understanding the code and editing specific lines to better suit our needs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are all very proud of the idea and pitches we gave today: from the live pitch to the virtual demo. Overall, it has been such a great experience getting to know new people I might have never met if not for this event.
What we learned
On the soft skills side, we learned a lot about how to communicate with team members to ensure we got our opinions across without devaluing someone else’s opinion. Technically, we learned how to use AWS tools and what type of tools there were available to use.
What's next for Vroomy
While right now Vroomy focuses on dorm life where you’re only sharing one bathroom with various people, in the future we’d like to expand it so that it can accommodate several people being able to share the public bathrooms (for example, the living situation for classic dorm rooms). Additionally, in the future, we hope to refine our priority scheduling to ensure that every roommate has equal opportunity to choose their time slots.
When in doubt, Vroomy it out.
