Inspiration 🌟
VR Viz was inspired by the desire to help individuals interact and understand Montreal's Open Data. Motivated by the potential to transform data exploration into an immersive experience, our team aimed to create a platform that goes beyond traditional visualizations, allowing users to step into the intricate world of Montreal's datasets.
What it does 🌐
VR Viz is a virtual reality application that utilizes photorealistic 3D Tiles from Google to bring Montreal's Open Data to life. Users can explore dynamic and realistic maps, uncovering trends and hidden patterns within the city's diverse datasets. The application offers an intuitive and immersive environment, enabling users to navigate through spatial data seamlessly and gain a deeper understanding of Montreal's socio-economic and environmental landscape.
How we built it 🛠️
The foundation of VR Viz is built upon Unity as our primary development platform, leveraging C# for scripting. Google's photorealistic 3D Tiles played a pivotal role in generating lifelike maps, while Cesium provided the framework for effective visualization of location-based data. Python was employed for efficient data manipulation, ensuring accuracy and visual appeal within the VR setting.
The development process involved careful consideration of user experience, with iterative design cycles refining the interface and interactions. The integration of diverse technologies allowed us to create a seamless and captivating experience, showcasing Montreal's Open Data in a new and compelling light.
Challenges we ran into 🚧
Incorporating Google's photorealistic 3D Tiles presented challenges, requiring us to strike a balance between realism and optimizing performance. Navigating spatial data integration intricacies and ensuring a smooth transition between datasets demanded collaborative problem-solving and iterative development cycles.
Accomplishments that we're proud of 🎉
We take pride in achieving immersive visualizations and an interactive exploration, maintaining optimal performance. The seamless integration of diverse technologies and the creation of an immersive user experience stand as significant accomplishments for the VR Viz project.
What we learned 🧠
The development of VR Viz provided invaluable insights into the transformative power of VR for data exploration. Learning to harness the capabilities of Google's photorealistic 3D Tiles, along with the intricacies of spatial data representation, expanded our expertise and understanding of creating compelling VR experiences.
What's next for VR Viz 🔮
As VR Viz continues to evolve, we envision expanding its capabilities by incorporating additional datasets, enhancing interactivity, and refining visualizations. Our goal is to make VR Viz an indispensable tool for researchers, city planners, and citizens alike, fostering a deeper connection with Montreal's data-rich landscape through the lens of virtual reality.
