Inspiration

PowerTrain XR was inspired by a simple question:

How do we safely train technicians for failures that are too dangerous, too expensive, or too disruptive to recreate in the real world?

Throughout my career as a journeyman electrician and electrical maintenance leader, I've worked in hospitals and municipal water infrastructure where reliability is critical. Many technicians encounter major electrical failures for the first time during a real emergency. I wanted to build a safer way to gain that experience before working on energized equipment.

What it does

PowerTrain XR is a browser-based digital twin training platform for mission-critical electrical infrastructure.

This prototype demonstrates a realistic synchronous motor pumping station where users can explore equipment, practice operational procedures, interact with electrical systems, and experience industrial training in a safe virtual environment.

The long-term vision is a modular platform supporting water utilities, hospitals, manufacturing facilities, electrical substations, and data centers.

How we built it

PowerTrain XR combines real-world industrial electrical experience with modern web technologies and AI-assisted software development.

The project uses React, TypeScript, Three.js, and browser-based technologies to create an immersive training environment. GPT-5.6 and Codex were used to accelerate implementation, organize architecture, generate code, refine documentation, and rapidly iterate on ideas. The electrical systems, operational procedures, equipment behavior, and training concepts were designed using practical field experience.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was translating real industrial electrical operations into software.

Mission-critical facilities contain complex interlocks, operating procedures, safety requirements, and failure scenarios that must behave realistically to provide meaningful training.

Rather than attempting to recreate an entire utility during the hackathon, I focused on creating a representative prototype that demonstrates the foundation of a much larger platform.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a functional digital twin training prototype. Combined decades of electrical field experience with AI-assisted software development. Created a realistic industrial environment inspired by mission-critical infrastructure. Established a scalable architecture capable of expanding into multiple industries. Built a browser-based training experience that demonstrates realistic operational concepts.

What we learned

This project reinforced that realistic industrial training requires much more than detailed graphics. The real value comes from accurately representing operational procedures, troubleshooting methodology, electrical protection systems, and the practical decision-making used by experienced technicians. AI-assisted development dramatically accelerated software development, allowing ideas to move from concept to working prototype much faster than traditional development alone

What's next for PowerTrain XR – AI-Powered Digital Twin Training

PowerTrain XR will continue evolving into a complete digital twin training platform.

Planned capabilities include:

Interactive electrical logic AI-powered training assistant SCADA integration Office-based shift startup Randomized fault scenarios Instructor mode Student performance tracking Customer-specific digital twins Multi-user collaboration VR optimization Additional facilities including hospitals, utilities, manufacturing plants, and data centers

The long-term goal is to help organizations preserve operational knowledge while providing safer, more effective workforce training.
