As someone coming to Junction Hacks from abroad, I can definitely say that existing In-flight entertainment system is something that needs improvement. We believe that Virtual Reality can bring about this change.
What it does
It is a complete in-flight entertainment and information system and adds an extra dimension to the existing in-flight entertainment technology.
How I built it
We built the whole in-flight entertainment system in Unity and project the end result in an Oculus Rift DK2. Flightwise API was used to get real time flight information like latitude, longitude, altitude and arrival times. Google Places API was used to extract points of interest near the aircraft's current location in real time. Wikipedia API was used to extract information for the points of interest to the passengers. Google Maps API was used to track the fight path on the map. We built a stereoscopic 3d camera using two Logitech C310 webcam to demonstrate the Live 3D video feed below the aircraft.
Challenges I ran into
We faced many challenges to find real-time flight data as Flight Stats API takes more than 48 hours for approval. We tried integrating a 120 degree FOV lens on our cameras but we were not able to get a focused image, so we stuck to the original 60 degree FOV lens for demonstration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud that we were able to make our platform fully functional in real-time using real world data from FlightWise API. We were proud of how much we were able to add to our In-flight entertainment system making it both highly entertaining and informative.
What I learned
Before this hackathon I had no experience using external API's to implement a novel idea. I am very proud of the fact that I was able to learn new programming languages and be able to use them to create something interactive.
What's next for VR SO FLY.
We would love to have our product tested on a real aircraft having external cameras on its exterior. We feel that this is the only way to unleash the true potential of our product.
Innovative interface The entertainment center is controlled with an Xbox One controller, and the whole interface is a full virtual world, visioned with an Oculus Rift. We have optimized the movements such that they can be carried out in an airplane without disturbing other passengers.
