Inspiration

We have never developed a large-scale game before, nor have we worked with VR technologies. This project was an opportunity to learn how to do both within the Unity engine

What it does

The player is in the cockpit of a sports car, driving through the streets of Downtown Manhattan. All terrain and streets are imported from satellite data. As the player drives, their location is tracked using Firebase Realtime Database and displayed on the companion website.

How I built it

The game is built in Unity using the Oculus SDK, Firebase SDK, and Mapbox SDK.

Challenges I ran into

We wanted to originally have users log on to a website to place races, ramps and other challenges for the player, but we ran out of time.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

For never having developed with either Unity, VR, or C#, we completed a significant amount in just 36 hours. We add a lot of small details, like 3D buildings from real geometry, a day/night cycle, and detailed interior of the car.

What I learned

Unity, C#, VR and Oculus Rift, Mapbox, Firebase

What's next for VR Driving Project (WIP)

Adding more map data, optimizing terrain and building geometry, adding the ability to change camera location (chase, front of hood, etc.)
