Inspiration

Attending Zoom University, I never knew how hard it would be to stay engaged, overcome the fatigue of zoom, and get myself in the right mindset to study/go to class. The monotony of the same setting was driving me crazy and ruining all my study, learning, and work habits.

What it does

VR classroom seeks to address all these problems through an immersive classroom experience in VR where you can watch zoom lectures, experience them with other students in your favorite locations, and enhance learning through the ability to create interactive lectures!

How we built it

This app was created using Unity’s OpenXR integration and the 3D photo-capture technology built into your smartphone. We went around to various iconic study spaces and locations on campus and took 360 photos and 3D scans with our phones and then imported them into Unity, which was super simple, so the addition of extra locations is a breeze.

Challenges we ran into

Locked classrooms.... Ya apparently lecture halls are not open on the weekend so we were able to get your favorite classrooms: Brockman 101 and Herzstein Amp. Other than that, the technologies were super simple and intuitive which allows for easy integration and additions in the future.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of the interactive environment we created as well as the realism of Rice locations replicated in our VR world. We hope that you guys can try it out for yourselves!

What we learned

We learned how to utilize Lidar based scanning technology to produce 3D environments in Unity

What's next for VR Classroom

Multiplayer integration to allow for peer-peer interaction and pitching a mobile/desktop version of vr classroom to Rice as a solution for remote students to genuinely feel a part of the classroom.
