Inspiration

At Voyage, we believe that the best innovations stem from personal passion and genuine experiences. Our journey began with three college students who shared a dream to simplify the world of travel and create sustainable options that are easier to find.

Our shared dream, combined with our unique backgrounds and expertise, led us to create Voyage—a web app that blends the modern convenience of technology with sustainable travel options. We wanted to infuse the spirit of seafaring and the camaraderie of fellow sailors into the world of travel planning, making it an experience that is not only efficient but also thoroughly enjoyable.

So, as you embark on your own journeys with Voyage, know that we are dedicated to making your adventures as smooth, exciting, and memorable as possible. Adventure is out there! Bon Voyage!

How we built it

We began by thinking about problems we face in our lives and how we could solve them. Once we had an issue to solve, we got to work. First, we brainstormed and created a super loose wireframe on a whiteboard which helped to put us on the same path. Next, our UX designer branched out and started drafting ideas in which she made empathetic design choices while considering the end user. The developers built the application using the Angular framework and implemented our design using TypeScript, HTML, and CSS. We also utilized the OpenAI API to assist the user and give them informed ideas for activities to do during their trip.

Challenges we ran into

During the event, we ran into some issues with our AI assistant, Captain AI. While we were able to get responses back from the OpenAI API, we struggled with accessing the message in our TypeScript, which was not properly awaiting the responses.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our branding, design, and uniqueness! We were able to design a beautiful yet simple UI for this project that leads the user intuitively through the story we want to tell. We are also proud of how much of the main application we were actually able to implement. Without considering fine-tuning adjustments, we have the main function of the application down.

What we learned

UX Designer: I learned a lot about Figma's new Dev Mode and its limitations. While it seems convenient, it definitely needs some updates before it works properly. Once it's fully released, I think it will be a powerhouse!

Developers: We learned how to work with the OpenAI API in typescript and gained more experience with typescript in general.

What's next for Voyage

We would like to implement more features around sustainability next. Currently, you are able to opt for more sustainable trips and learn about your carbon footprint and how it increases with each option. In the future, we think being able to select a maximum carbon emission and swap options based on it would be a great way to travel sustainably.
