Inspiration
VoxRush was inspired by the thrill of fast reaction games, tunnel runners, and the satisfaction of landing a perfect sequence under pressure. I wanted to make something that feels immediate and intense from the first second — a game where you are always moving, always reacting, and always one mistake away from losing the run.
The voxel tunnel setting helped make the experience feel bold and futuristic, while the combo system gave it a way to reward precision instead of just survival. I wanted players to feel that rush of tension when they are barely threading through walls, then the payoff when they hit target after target and watch their score climb.
What it does
VoxRush is a quick reaction game where you auto-fly forward through a voxel tunnel and try to survive as long as possible.
The rules are simple:
- You fly forward automatically and never stop.
- You steer by dragging or tapping an empty cell to slide the reticle into the open gap in each wall.
- You hit spinning target gates to build your combo multiplier.
- Higher combo means more points.
- If you miss a target, the combo resets.
- If you hit a wall, the run ends.
- Reach the end of the tunnel to clear the level.
The result is a game that mixes reflexes, and score chasing into one fast-paced challenge.
How we built it
I built VoxRush around a constant forward-motion system so the player always feels pressure to react quickly. The tunnel design lets users control pacing very tightly, because every wall, gap, and target gate can be placed to create a specific moment of challenge.
The reticle, steering input, and target-gate mechanics were designed to work together as one flow. Players are not just dodging obstacles, they are also trying to line up clean hits to maintain combo momentum and maximize their score.
I focused on keeping the controls simple and touch-friendly so the game feels responsive on mobile input while still rewarding accuracy and timing.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was balancing speed with readability. Since the player is always moving forward, every wall and target had to be clear enough to react to, but still feel fast and dangerous.
Another challenge was tuning the combo system so it felt rewarding without being too punishing. I wanted missed targets to matter, but I did not want one mistake to make the entire run feel hopeless.
I also had to make sure the input felt precise. In a game like this, even a tiny delay or awkward tap response can break the flow, so a lot of care went into making the steering feel smooth.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud that VoxRush delivers an instant “one more try” feeling. The movement is simple, but the pressure of the tunnel and the combo system make every run feel exciting.
I'm also proud of how the game combines two different kinds of satisfaction: survival and scoring. It is not just about avoiding failure it is also about playing cleanly enough to build a strong multiplier.
Most of all, I'm proud that the game has a strong identity. The voxel tunnel aesthetic, the forward motion, and the reaction-based scoring all work together to create a focused, energetic experience.
What we learned
I learned that simple mechanics can become really engaging when they are combined with strong pacing and clear feedback. A small number of rules can still create a lot of tension if the timing is right.
I also learned how important it is to make challenge feel fair. Players should fail because they misread or mistimed something, not because the game was unclear or unresponsive.
Finally, I learned that combo systems add a lot more excitement than raw survival alone. They give players a reason to take risks, stay focused, and chase a better run.
What's next for VoxRush
Next, I want to expand VoxRush with more tunnel patterns, more target variations, and more level styles.
Possible future additions include:
- New obstacle types and wall shapes.
- More visual themes for different stages.
- Additional scoring modifiers and combo rewards.
- Challenge modes with stricter rules or special conditions.
