Inspiration

My inspiration was listening to Sam's need for intelligent reminders and how it intertwined with an idea I had for voice journaling. We're all bombarded every day with videos, news and a million and one distractions, so helping people keep track of their daily tasks and support mental health through journaling is a noble cause. I figured I could over-deliver on what Sam wanted to create a powerful, meditative reminders app.

What it does

Vox Diary enables anyone to record all their reminders, thoughts and ideas in one simple, beautiful voice-powered mobile app - helping people get their thoughts out of their head, into digital format, so they can sleep better at night. We wanted to go beyond Sam's scope and give him even more value.

How we built it

Unfortunately, we discovered this hackathon only 48 hours ago (51 to be precise), so how we really did it is a lot of Pepsi Max, a lot of caffeine, very little sleep and an immense amount of hustle. On a technical level, we used Flutter for the backend due to it's exceptional cross platform capability, Supabase was chosen over Firebase due to the simplicity and ease of use when creating databases, and the fact it scales so well. Cursor was our AI coding assistant of choice. And of course RevenueCat for paywall and revenue analytics.

Challenges we ran into

Sam requested intelligent custom reminders where a user can snooze a reminder by a custom amount of time - 22 minutes for example - and to do this from the phone notification without opening the app. This was quite a technical challenge. Text input in the notification popup on the phone is possible with Android but not possible with IOS, so we found a feature called UNTextInputNotificationAction that enables a user to input text into the keyboard and trigger the custom snooze time that way. Cross platform snoozing also required a lot of back-end work and syncing via Supabase edge functions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our beautiful, minimalist, single microphone button home screen that puts the focus on voice recording, and our innovative press-and-hold UX that creates a 'fan out' radial menu with icon buttons for reminders, voice journalling or ideas.

But maybe most of all, that we built this MVP app in just 48 hours! Imagine what we can do with a week or a year!

What we learned

Hackathons are fun, and with the right incentive, we can eat deadlines for dust.

What's next for Vox Diary - Intelligent Reminders & Voice Journalling

We'll be adding image journal entries, AI created stories based upon a user's entries, a community aspect, enhancements to reminder delegation, an Ai counsellor, and a web version of the app at voxdiary.com.
