Inspiration
Inspired by Dario Amodei's essay "Machines of Loving Grace" and the hackathon theme of creative flourishing. Democracy is a form of creative expression — but most people don't vote informed because reading 200-page policy documents isn't realistic. We wanted to make informed voting accessible to everyone in 5 minutes, and then help them express their civic voice.
What it does
Informed Vote is a 4-step interactive app:
- Choose your election — Select from US elections
- Pick & rank your issues — Select what matters to YOU and rank by priority
- Get personalized comparison — See candidates' real positions, evidence, and impact on your life, ordered by your priorities. Every claim cites official sources (Congress.gov, CBO, KFF, Ballotpedia)
- Find Your Voice — Write your raw opinion and Claude transforms it into a polished social media post, letter to your representative, dinner table argument, or personal essay
How we built it
Built entirely through conversation with Claude AI. Used Claude to brainstorm the concept, design the UX flow, and generate the full codebase. The app uses hardcoded data from official government sources for instant candidate comparisons, and the Claude API for the creative "Find Your Voice" feature and follow-up questions.
Challenges
- Making it NOT feel like a Claude wrapper — the visual comparison UI and personalized ranking create an experience impossible to replicate in a chat
- Balancing speed vs real-time data — solved by hardcoding verified data for instant loading
- Connecting democracy to creative flourishing — the "Find Your Voice" step bridges informed voting with creative civic expression
What we learned
First hackathon experience. Learned how to ship fast, prioritize MVP features, and use AI as a development partner rather than just a tool.
