What inspired us?
We as a group, were always interested in doing projects about renewable energy, and we hung on to the first opportunity we could find.
What is OSPAL?
OSPAL, aka Optimal Solar Panel Locator, is an AI that we wrote that locates every roof of every building in Germany including the angle, length, and width of that roof according to the distance of the roof and the satellites. And it doesn't stop there. OSPAL also calculates the azimuth and advises which buildings and regions are the best to install solar panels by analyzing the photovoltaic potential map of Germany.
How did OSPAL come to be?
With a lot of learning, calculating, and programming we managed to come up with OSPAL.
It wasn't easy...
Because we just started the second semester, we had no or limited knowledge of some necessary topics, we had to spend many nights without sleep and endless work and learning new topics such as advanced linear algebra, physics, programming, and especially a lot about solar panels.
Everything is a lesson, even failure.
Overall we are very proud of what we accomplished. We learned an incredible amount of new things and in the end, it was what we came here for. We had our setbacks of course, but even that was a lesson. In the end, we came up with OSPAL, an AI that we worked very hard for.
The journey is just as important as the destination.
We as a group, learned that the path we take to succeed is the most crucial and rewarding part of this adventure. We learned that with teamwork, anything really is possible. In the end, we learned that in TUM, you can accomplish anything if you work together and work endlessly without sleep.
This is just the beginning.
This is the first project ever that we worked on, and to do something complex and beautiful like OSPAL just gave us hope for the future. We believe that we will keep working on projects about renewable energy. We're just three Elektrotechnik students that just started the second semester, who knows what lies ahead of us?
