Voogle
Inspiration
Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly powerful, but access to AI still depends heavily on internet connectivity, smartphones, and expensive data plans. In many communities across Malawi and other developing regions, these requirements create a barrier for millions of people.
We asked a simple question:
What if someone could access AI using the same technology they already use every day—SMS?
That idea became Voogle.
What it does
Voogle AI is an AI access platform that enables users to interact with artificial intelligence through SMS.
Users send a text message from their mobile phone, and Voogle processes the request using cloud-based AI services before returning a response via SMS. This allows people to access AI-powered information and assistance without requiring a web browser, mobile application, or reliable internet connection.
Potential use cases include:
- Education and learning support
- Agricultural information
- General knowledge and research
- Digital inclusion for underserved communities
- Access to information in low-connectivity environments
How we built it
The platform consists of several connected components:
- SMS infrastructure for receiving and sending messages.
- A backend application that processes incoming requests.
- Cloud AI services that generate responses.
- A database for storing interactions and user activity.
- An administrative dashboard for monitoring usage and platform performance.
When a user sends a message, the system receives the SMS, forwards the request to the AI engine, generates a response, and sends the answer back through SMS.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was creating an experience that feels useful despite the limitations of SMS.
We also had to address:
- SMS delivery and response reliability
- Managing conversation flow through text messages
- Connecting multiple services into a single workflow
- Designing a solution that works for users with limited digital resources
Another challenge was balancing AI capabilities with affordability and accessibility for users in low-connectivity environments.
What we learned
Building Voogle reinforced an important lesson:
Technology is most impactful when it meets people where they already are.
While many AI solutions focus on users with smartphones and broadband access, there is still significant demand for tools that work through existing communication channels such as SMS.
We also gained valuable experience integrating cloud services, AI APIs, messaging systems, and user management tools into a single platform.
What's next for Voogle
Our next goals include:
- Expanding pilot testing with more users
- Supporting additional local use cases
- Improving response quality and reliability
- Exploring multilingual support
- Developing partnerships that can increase accessibility and reach
Our long-term vision is to make AI accessible to everyone, regardless of device type, internet access, or location.
