Inspiration
As a high schooler in my year 1 1 and 12, working in the Gnanadarshan seva foundation for blind women in Chennai, India, taught me not just compassion but, a way to see the world from their eyes. During my service period there, I was determined in my pursuit to ease their process of education and condense it just like it is for any normal student. It was that time the idea for VolunTutor was born.
What it does
VolunTutor connects visually impaired students with volunteer tutors for free, one-on-one, online learning -and rewards volunteers with real teaching experience and a certified credential from partnered blind schools.
How we built it
We used vibe-coding agent - Claude code - to majorly program the webiste using typescript and coded the website layout aspects using HTML and CSS. We also linked the main application to EmailJS (Free email service that pops a message during sign-up), Vercel (Free online hosting platform) and SupaBase (Database manager).
Challenges we stumbled upon
Streamlining the requests pipeline smoothly between the students and the tutors was by far one of the most challenging aspects of creating the website. Creating the right system for requests management expelled several hours of crucial programming time. Also, not relying on a preset Claude md file ensured that we could not seamlessly access Claude's design skill commands but rather get stuck with the general skills itself.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We already have around 20 students waitlisted from the Gnandharshana seva foundation willing to use the website.
What we learned
During the process, we understood that full-stack development just does not rely on an agentic AI such as Claude code, but the complete harmonious functioning of all elements such a Database manager - Supabase, Email service provider - EmailJS and reliable hosting website - SupaBase along with the main frontend design of the website.
What's next for VolunTutor - Learning with no limits
1) Partner with major companies and promote the website via CSR (Corporate social responsibility) acts 2) Generate ad revenue from the service 3) Expand globally - Not just India accessible, but the whole world
