Inspiration

Discussion around the entertainment industry recently has been dominated by its lack of access to the average American. Taylor Swift, the Lakers or any large event - the majority of tickets are bought by the wealthiest Americans.

At the same time - sports teams, individual artists and large media groups are always looking to serve their local communities in a more efficient way and productive way. For example, most NFL and NBA teams have programs where fans volunteer in the local community in exchange for merch and other prizes such as match tickets.

We propose VolunTix, an innovative platform where artists and other organizations donate a portion of their tickets or other related merchandize to community volunteers. Volunteers sign up to VolunTix, and can find volunteering opportunities in their local communities. After they sign up and volunteer, they earn 'Impact Points' which can be redeemed on the Voluntix Store for tickets, merch and other goodies.

VolunTix is the first platform to incentivize volunteering at scale - independent of a sports team or a particular artist.

What it does

VolunTix provides a seamless platform where volunteers can easily find and engage in community service opportunities. They earn 'Impact Points' for their contributions, which can be used to gain access to a variety of entertainment experiences, including event tickets, exclusive merchandise, and other valuable rewards.

How we built it

VolunTix is built using modern web technologies, with a captivating and user-friendly interface powered by React for the frontend. React's versatility and efficiency ensure a seamless user experience as volunteers navigate the platform to discover and engage in various community service opportunities.

To manage the backend and database, we rely on Firebase. Firebase provides the scalability and reliability necessary to handle the complex task of tracking volunteer contributions and rewarding them with 'Impact Points.'

Challenges we ran into

While the hackathon went very smoothly for us, we did run into some hiccups:

  1. Fixing tiny styling bugs which made the user experience worse
  2. Figuring out a consistent design theme

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We take great pride in VolunTix. We managed to create a fully functional app that is ready for user deployment, with the potential to immediately benefit communities, all within the hackathon's time constraints. Our design theme is consistent and seamless, ensuring an intuitive navigation experience, even for those who may not be tech-savvy. Our filtering algorithm ensures that users only see events relevant to their interests.

What we learned

Participating in this hackathon taught us how to work effectively in a team under time constraints. We learned to collaborate in debugging and brainstorming. On the technical side, one of our team members was introduced to React.js for the first time, and we all had the opportunity to learn and teach in the process.

What's next for VolunTix

Our vision for VolunTix is to establish a concrete connection between the entertainment industry and local communities. While this will involve substantial logistical work, we believe that VolunTix can be a transformative product that truly helps people.
