Inspiration
We want to bridge the gap between potential volunteers and local volunteer opportunities. We've personally missed out on volunteer opportunities even though we've wanted to volunteer for the sole reason that we were unaware of local opportunities.
What it does
Volunteer Today® strives to promote awareness and connect members of the community with opportunities to volunteer and help better society. As an organization we encourage people to give back and help community projects. The user basically opens the app and chooses their location and a map of their current location will appear containing volunteering opportunities. Then they have variety of opportunities to choose from represented by points on a map. Each point contains more information on that specific location.
How we built it
We created a user friendly android app using Android Studio and inserted a map we created ourselves using arcGIS Desktop.
Challenges we ran into
We had many technical issues at the start of the Hackathon. Not everyone had the arcGIS software and no one had or knew how to use Android Studio. Downloading software also took a while.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of our efficiency in learning both Android Studio and arcGIS Desktop. We tapped into our inner creativity and thought of an idea to promote social good. We are very proud of our time management skills and patience throughout the entirety of the hackathon.
What we learned
Together we learned how to create an app using Android Studio and created the code to manipulate buttons, texts, and activities. We also learned how to locate areas on arcGIS and add drop pins in specific areas.
What's next for VolunteerToday
Use Google's Geocode API for organizations to register themselves and be in the system. Then community members can go in and register directly with the organization. In the future we hope to add more locations to promote social community service in more areas.
