Inspiration
We were inspired by two of our team members, Dzaky and Nabila, who are currently studying in high school. They already have an interest in the world of IT since childhood. When we met Nabila and Dzaky at Garuda Hacks 4.0, it turned out that we also found other high school students, some even younger. That's when we realize, To have a career in IT World, u can start from such a young age, even as a high school student, without any specific Degree.
Then I discussed with Nabila and Dzaky what interested them in joining this competition. They said that Garuda Hacks 4.0 was a way for them to practice their skills and want to collaborate with new people with their interests. However, Nabila and Dzaky said that getting information about activities such as competitions, internships, or volunteering was difficult, especially for high school students. However, they also want the same opportunities as people who study IT in general, learn and then practice through real-life cases, so from this story, we agreed to make VolunteerIn.
What it does
VolunteerIn is an online platform where high school students like Dzaky, Nabila, and others can meet, make friends, and collaborate. They can also know the latest event where they can practice their IT skills with the guidance of professionals from institutions or organizations.
How we built it
First we did a brainstorming, then we did a division of tasks, with the following composition:
- Salma - Project Manager, Hustler.
- Romi - BackEnd.
- Dzaky - FrontEnd.
- Nabila - UI/UX Designer. Next, we created VolunteerIn using Figma for the design, Strapi.js for the BackEnd, and HTML for the FrontEnd. Last we compile our code on GitHub, so that it can be deployed by Romi.
Challenges we ran into
we have a problem in BackEnd deployment, because there are not many free options for BackEnd deployment. We use Strapi.js, but it ends up costing us to deploy it. So most likely, we will submit it in the form of a local deploy.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud that at their current age, Dzaky and Nabila have a sense of empathy for their younger generation, 'If Nabila and Dzaky can know and take part in Garuda Hacks today, others should too'. Romi and I are also proud because we can finally direct how we make VolunteerIn.
What we learned
Since this was the first Hackathon experience for most of us, the process of collaboration, learning, brainstorming and evaluation became the most enjoyable process. Romi and I are also happy to be able to guide Dzaky and Nabila like a brother and sister. As someone who has experience working on projects, Romi and I try to instill that a Hackathon is not only about how good our hard skills are, but it also involves a lot of soft skills in it. And we are proud that we can get through all of this.
What's next for VolunteerIn
What we can do next for VolunteerIn is of course the most important thing is to gather young people the same age as Dzaky and Nabila themselves, then collaborate with them to develop the VolunteerIn website, as well as develop an online community for them.
