Inspiration

Although there are various social-event platforms, there are very few that provide a one-stop, dedicated solution in the Volunteering realm.

The issues that drove us to build VolunteerED:

  1. Lack of an accessible, trusted and a collaborative platform.
  2. Missing philanthropic mindset.
  3. Increased loneliness and isolation post-pandemic.
  4. Lack of opportunities despite the will to contribute to society.

Many people are trying to find solutions for these; we tried to find an optimal one.

What it does

VolunteerED connects volunteers with organisers. Organisers can post opportunities and volunteers can register their interest. Volunteers can view opportunities conveniently on the Google Map available on the website and filter through categories which match their interests.

How we built it

We used the Django framework, along with HTML/CSS/JavaScript for the front-end. The website is deployed on Heroku and is using a PostgreSQL database.

Challenges we ran into

It was difficult to implement multiple markers with overlays and apply filters using Google Maps. After searching through some articles on the Google Maps API, we eventually settled on an elegant solution which allowed us to achieve all of the above.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a one-stop platform that is accessible by all age groups and dedicated to making philanthropy a way of life. People can even contribute while sitting at home (virtual opportunities). There are opportunities for everyone.

What we learned

This project enabled us to connect with fellow peers and gave us a great opportunity to work together despite the restrictions imposed by the current pandemic situation.

What's next for VolunteerED

Collaborate with trusted organisations and provide our volunteers with safe opportunities within their reach. Enable the feature for users to connect with other people, view their profile and be a part of their journey. Introduce badges and certificates to appreciate and uplift the spirit of our hard-working volunteers and organisations. Connect with the influential social activists like Michael Bloomberg and Bill and Melinda Gates.
