Inspiration
After watching my retired parents struggle to find volunteer work that honored their decades of professional experience (mom’s teaching background, dad’s finance expertise), I saw a gap: most platforms don’t center seniors’ unique skills, flexibility, or desire for purpose. I wanted to build something that celebrated their wisdom, not just their availability.
What it does
Volunteer Match Senior connects 55+ adults with volunteer roles aligned to their skills (mentoring, teaching, finance, gardening—name it!), location, and schedule. It lets users track their impact (hours, thank-you notes, certificates) and discover roles that feel meaningful, not just "busy work."
How we built it
I started with core user needs: readability (18px base font), intuitive filtering, and warm, approachable design. Using HTML/CSS for structure, Vanilla JS for interactivity (skill matching, filter logic, animations), and TailwindCSS for responsive, senior-friendly styling. I added scroll animations (IntersectionObserver) and glassmorphism for modern, easy-on-the-eyes UI.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was balancing visual appeal with accessibility—senior users need clear text, minimal clutter, and no overwhelming animations. I also had to refine the skill-matching logic to feel intuitive (not overly technical) while still delivering relevant role suggestions. Testing hover states and color contrast for readability took multiple iterations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a design that’s both beautiful and functional for seniors—soft gold accents, warm navys, and elevated cards that feel welcoming but not childish. The impact tracking dashboard, with its glassmorphism stat cards and personalized thank-you notes, brings joy to users by celebrating their contributions.
What we learned
I learned to prioritize user empathy over trend-chasing—seniors want tools that respect their experience, not simplify things for them. I also mastered scroll-triggered animations and client-side state management (localStorage) to create a seamless, no-login experience.
What's next for this project
First, expand the skill categories to include niche expertise (e.g., healthcare administration, small business consulting). Then, add a "senior-to-senior" mentorship feature, and integrate local community organization partnerships to connect users with real, on-the-ground opportunities in their areas. Finally, optimize for mobile to reach more users.
