Inspiration
In light of recent Hurricane Helene, VolunSeer was inspired by the urgent need for effective community-driven aid during natural disasters. Seeing the impact of previous disasters and the challenges faced by affected communities highlighted the importance of a platform that connects volunteers, donors, and those in need.
What it does
VolunSeer is a mobile app that facilitates community-driven disaster relief efforts. It enables users to report disaster-related needs, connect with volunteers, and organize aid distribution efficiently. The app features real-time location tracking and a reporting system for needs and resources.
How we built it
The app was developed using React Native, allowing for cross-platform compatibility. We implemented a user-friendly interface with easy access to the Map and Report screens. We utilized user locations to display current reports around them such that they can have proper knowledge of where they can help the most. Our team collaborated on defining the app's structure, designing the UI, and ensuring the backend could handle real-time updates.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges included managing the complexity of real-time data updates and ensuring the app could handle multiple users reporting needs simultaneously. Additionally, ensuring the app's usability for individuals with varying levels of tech savviness was crucial but required extensive testing and feedback.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of successfully implementing the reporting and navigation features, as they directly contribute to the app's functionality in a crisis. The collaborative effort of the team in tackling technical challenges and designing an intuitive user interface was also a significant achievement.
What we learned
We gained insights into managing location services and real-time data synchronization, which are vital for the app's effectiveness. We broadened our perspectives about the struggles many people undergo during a natural disaster, especially those in disproportional communities.
What's next for VolunSeer
Next, we plan to enhance VolunSeer by integrating more robust features such as push notifications for urgent alerts, expanded community resource management tools, and potential partnerships with local organizations for increased outreach. We also aim to conduct user testing with actual communities to refine the app further and ensure it meets their needs effectively.
