Inspiration

Faults on distribution lines can lead to unnecessary interruptions, lengthy restoration periods, and hazards. Our aim was to develop an efficient fault detection and location system, which would isolate only the portion of the line experiencing the fault.

What it does

The VoltZafe is used to observe different electrical variables in various parts of the distribution line. In the event of a fault, the abnormal situation will be detected, the faulty part determined, and the appropriate relay actuated to disconnect that part.

How we built it

VoltZafe was designed by developing sensing and control nodes based on ESP32 technology. The sensors responsible for voltage and current detection work on the line, while LoRa is used for wireless communication among the nodes. The control unit analyzes the information coming from the node and manages the relay fault isolation process.

Challenges we ran into

However, the issues that arose included accurate fault detection and localization, efficient LoRa communication, sensor noise, and dependable relay functionality. We tried various scenarios and optimized our sensing, communications, and control mechanisms to increase reliability.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A working model has been made, which is capable of fault detection, identification of the faulty part, and isolation of the faulty section through relays. We are especially pleased about incorporating sensing, wireless communication, and automatic isolation into one system.

What we learned

Practical knowledge regarding power systems protection, fault detection, ESP32 programming, LoRa communication, interfacing with sensors, relay control and embedded systems was acquired by us. It is also important to test our hardware for faults.

What's next for Voltzafe

Our plan involves improving the accuracy of fault localization, making our system robust enough to cope with real-world distribution networks, implementing remote monitoring features and automatic power restoration once the faulty segment has been isolated.
