What's next for VoltVault — home energy use on Alexa+
Inspiration
We noticed that many homeowners find energy consumption data overwhelming and difficult to interpret for daily life. We wanted to create a bridge between complex meter data and actionable advice using a conversational interface. By focusing on Alexa+, we could transform raw data into a helpful household assistant.
What it does
VoltVault monitors home energy use patterns and provides personalized recommendations to reduce waste. It uses AI agents to analyze usage habits and suggests specific times to shift appliance usage to cheaper rates. The system automates these tasks to ensure maximum efficiency across the entire home.
How we built it
We built the backend using Python and deployed our services on AWS App Runner for scalable performance. We integrated Amazon Bedrock to power the reasoning engine and used CrewAI to orchestrate multi-agent workflows for energy analysis. The user interface is entirely handled through the Alexa+ surface integration.
Challenges we ran into
We initially struggled with synchronizing real-time energy data with the asynchronous nature of the AI agents. We also faced challenges in ensuring the CrewAI agents stayed within the timeout limits required for voice interactions. Tuning the prompts in Bedrock to provide accurate energy advice required significant iteration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of how seamlessly we integrated multiple AI agents to handle complex energy-saving scenarios. The final integration with Alexa+ feels natural and responsive, which was a major goal for us. Successfully deploying on App Runner allowed us to focus on code rather than infrastructure management.
What we learned
We learned a lot about orchestrating multi-agent systems for specific domains like energy management. We also gained deeper insights into how to structure data for conversational-first applications on Alexa+. This experience sharpened our understanding of serverless deployment patterns for high-compute AI apps.
What's next for VoltVault
We plan to integrate more smart plug APIs to allow for more granular automated load shedding. We also want to add predictive modeling to forecast monthly bills based on current usage trends. Expanding the agent capabilities to include solar battery storage optimization is next on our roadmap.
