Inspiration
As the adoption of electric vehicles grows, I noticed a lack of centralized, accessible platforms to help users locate and manage EV charging stations. This inspired me to build VoltSpot — a full-stack solution that bridges this gap through technology, clean UI, and real-time interactivity, promoting sustainability and user convenience.
What it does
VoltSpot is a responsive web application that:
- Displays 20+ EV charging stations on an interactive OpenStreetMap
- Allows users to search, filter, and view detailed station info
- Provides role-based dashboards with full CRUD operations
- Secures endpoints using JWT-based authentication and authorization
- Ensures smooth experience on all devices with a fully responsive UI
How we built it
- Frontend: React.js with OpenStreetMap (Leaflet), fully responsive design
- Backend: Node.js & Express.js following MVC architecture
- Database: MongoDB with Mongoose schemas
- Authentication: JWT, cookie-based sessions, protected routes
- Validation:
express-validatorand client-side input checks - Additional tools: Bolt (mock API), Postman (testing), backend logging
Challenges we ran into
- Integrating OpenStreetMap with custom markers and interactive features
- Structuring clean and scalable backend using MVC principles
- Implementing data validation and access control at both frontend and backend
- Managing user roles and authentication securely without affecting UX
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a secure, scalable full-stack application from scratch
- Successfully implemented map-based dynamic listings with real-time filtering
- Developed a fully functional role-based dashboard for users
- Delivered a smooth, mobile-first responsive design
What we learned
- Deepened practical experience with the MERN stack
- Integrated and customized geolocation features with OpenStreetMap
- Gained hands-on experience with API handling, error logging, and secure auth
- Improved backend structuring and validation practices using Express
What's next for VoltSpot
- Add real-time station availability and booking features
- Implement reviews, ratings, and user activity logs
- Integrate with Google Maps API for enhanced features
- Build an admin dashboard for analytics and management
- Deploy on cloud with MongoDB Atlas, Vercel, or Render
