🚗 Inspiration

Every day, millions of vehicles contribute to rising carbon emissions, traffic accidents, and fuel wastage—largely due to lack of awareness about driving behavior and vehicle health. We wanted to create a platform that not only monitors real-time vehicle performance but also empowers users with insights to drive safer, save fuel, and reduce environmental impact. Thus, VoltDrive was born — a smart companion for modern drivers.

⚙️ What it does

VoltDrive is an AI-powered automotive analytics platform that connects with your car’s OBD-II port to deliver real-time diagnostics, trip analysis, and personalized driving recommendations. It offers:

  • Live OBD-II Monitoring – View engine performance and error codes instantly.
  • Driving Score – A smart 0–100 rating based on acceleration, braking, and idling.
  • Fuel Efficiency Tracking – Compare actual fuel usage vs. expected benchmarks.
  • CO₂ & Cost Impact – Understand your driving’s effect on the planet and your wallet.
  • Trip Visualizations – Route tracking and behavior mapping using GPS.
  • AI Recommendations – Personalized insights after each trip and weekly summaries.
  • Maintenance Alerts – Early warnings for potential vehicle issues.
  • Offline Sync – Continue logging data even without internet.
  • Case Logging with Salesforce – Automatically create support tickets for recurring issues.
  • Email & SMS Notifications – Real-time updates for critical events and insights.

🛠️ How we built it

We combined hardware, AI, and Salesforce integration to bring VoltDrive to life:

Frontend

  • React 18.3.1 + TypeScript 5.5.3 – Built a fast and type-safe dashboard.
  • Tailwind CSS 3.3.2 – For responsive and clean UI styling.
  • Recharts + React Leaflet – To visualize trips, stats, and route maps.

Backend & Integration

  • OBD-II Module (VoltRide) – For real-time engine and sensor data.
  • GPS Module – Captures trip path and speed data.
  • Salesforce API – Used for:
    • Storing user and trip data
    • Logging vehicle cases automatically based on health or safety triggers
    • Tracking emails and notifications via Salesforce activity logs
  • Netlify Functions – Serverless backend API and webhook listener.
  • WatsonX AI Integration – Generates AI-based recommendations per trip and weekly summaries.

Tooling

  • Vite 5.4.2 – Lightning-fast builds and hot reloading.
  • ESLint + TypeScript ESLint – Ensured code quality and maintainability.
  • PostCSS + Autoprefixer – For modern CSS compatibility.

🚧 Challenges we ran into

  • OBD-II Data Noise – Normalizing sensor data across vehicle brands and models.
  • Real-time Syncing – Dealing with spotty network connections during trips.
  • Case Deduplication – Avoiding duplicate Salesforce cases for the same issue.
  • Email Tracking – Ensuring delivery, formatting, and log consistency in Salesforce.
  • Driving Score Calibration – Making scoring both fair and useful across users.

    VoltDrive has been successfully deployed as a fully functional full-stack application using Netlify. The live app is available at https://voltdrive.me, demonstrating seamless integration of frontend, backend, and real-time data handling through Netlify's deployment pipeline.

  • Custom Domain Challenge (Use Entri to get an IONOS Domain Name and publish your Bolt.new app on the domain):
    We used Entri to register our custom domain voltdrive.me via IONOS and configured it to host our Bolt.new application. The site is live and fully functional under the custom domain, ensuring a professional and branded web presence.

  • Inspirational Story (For projects with a powerful origin story):
    VoltDrive was built from a deep personal mission: to empower everyday drivers to make better, data-driven choices for safer and greener mobility. What makes this story powerful is the fact that the entire web application was built using Bolt.new, by just typing prompts — a first-time experience for the developer. From concept to deployment, VoltDrive is proof that with the right tools and intent, anyone can build meaningful, impactful technology from a simple idea.
