Volt: Gamifying Energy Savings with AI and Solana

Inspiration

The accelerating climate crisis and rising energy costs pushed us to rethink how individuals interact with their electricity usage. We asked ourselves: “What if reducing energy waste was not just a duty but a game?” That spark led us to Volt an app that empowers households to monitor their energy in real-time, act on AI-driven insights, and earn rewards using blockchain technology.

What it does

Volt allows users to: • Connect smart plugs to monitor and control devices remotely. • Track energy usage in real-time via a mobile dashboard. • Receive AI-generated, personalized energy-saving suggestions. • Earn Solana-based token rewards for efficient energy habits. • Compete in community leaderboards and unlock green achievements.

How we built it • Frontend: React Native (Expo) for iOS and Android UI. • Backend: Node.js + Express API with Supabase (PostgreSQL) for user data and authentication. • IoT Connectivity: MQTT-based real-time device communication. • AI Module: Python microservice generating personalized usage tips. • Blockchain: Smart contract on Solana via Anchor, issuing rewards as NFTs or SPL tokens. • Push Notifications: Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) for alerts and reminders.

Challenges we ran into • Ensuring low-latency communication between devices and app. • Preventing wallet complexity from disrupting user experience we had to abstract away private key interactions. • Training lightweight AI models to give meaningful suggestions within mobile compute limits. • Aligning energy data with real-time control in a user-friendly interface under hackathon time constraints.

🏆 Accomplishments that we’re proud of • Successfully integrating real-time MQTT flows with live UI updates. • Creating a fully offline-compatible blockchain rewards mechanism with no prior Solana UX dependency. • Building an energy AI microservice that outputs actionable tips with zero hallucination. • Launching a working cross-platform prototype in under 48 hours.

What we learned • How to merge Web3 + IoT + AI into a seamless user experience. • Practical challenges of deploying on Solana with constrained mobile resources. • That behavior change starts with engagement — gamification truly boosts user energy mindfulness. • Importance of balancing tech innovation with ethical UX and data privacy.

What’s next for Volt • Expand smart plug support to broader IoT ecosystems (e.g., Matter, Zigbee). • Launch a pilot with real households to validate energy and behavioral impact. • Build a green energy marketplace using Solana where users can spend their rewards. • Open-source the AI module to help developers build smarter energy tools for their regions.
