Inspiration

Thorough brainstorming on how we can help people through software lead us to making Voidtracers. Voidtracers is relatively simple and does not require any external hardware. Voidtracers takes heavy inspiration from a popular Roblox game called Nullscape as well as another Roblox game called Sound Space Rhythm Game.

What it does

Voidtracers places targets on the screen connected by lines and players can get higher scores by tracing the lines more accurately. This is a great exercise for people with limited motor control to be able to treat after repeated training.

How we built it

Voidtracers uses the Unity game engine which uses C# and the Mono framework. We also used music from Nullscape and sound effects from Undertale, and a stock texture for the skybox.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into quite a few issues, specifically with git and merge conflicts with internal Unity files. If someone were to edit a Unity setting that defined part of how the game was supposed to load, and another person were to do that as well, merge conflicts would arise. Typically this would not be a huge issue, but using VS-Code to resolve these conflicts would break Unity in a variety of ways. Unity's editor was nor particularly more helpful at resolving these issues, and there were a few times that the easier option was to re-clone the entire repo. A lot of the other issues were just because of our lack of knowledge in the Unity game engine, which was resolved by learning through various means.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

UI programming took a while to make despite looking simple! The game is simple and well-scoped which allowed us to finish early and polish out the game. We even had time to add some extra features such as style ranking and sound effects.

What we learned

Learning about the engine as a whole but also learning about situations where scripts are only local to a single scene and scripts that are globally. Using pre-fabs allowed for re-usability across multiple scenes and therefore made it easier to add features such as a pause menu.

What's next for Voidtracer

Release to itch.io, procedural generation, more detailed backgrounds / levels, refined UI, more gameplay settings, multiple game modes
