Inspiration
Every day, millions of people click "I Agree" without reading the Terms & Conditions. With growing access to the internet, kids and elderly users often click on anything without fully understanding the consequences. Even if people want to understand these agreements, legal documents are often lengthy, filled with technical language, and difficult for non-lawyers to interpret. We wanted to build a tool that helps users make informed decisions before accepting everyday digital agreements.
What it does
VoiceMyRights is a platform that analyzes Terms & Conditions and other everyday legal agreements. Users can paste or upload a document, and the platform generates:
- A simplified summary in plain language
- A risk score
- Potential red flags
- Data privacy concerns
- Actionable suggestions before accepting the agreement
Our goal is to make legal information more understandable and accessible to everyone.
How we built it
We divided the work into frontend and backend development.
1) Frontend: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for a clean, user-friendly interface. 2) Backend: Node.js and Express to process requests and analyze documents. 3) Analysis Engine: A rule-based system that identifies potentially risky clauses, privacy-related terms, and generates a risk score, summaries, and recommendations. 4) Deployment: Using Railway
Our current implementation uses keyword-based analysis to highlight important clauses in everyday agreements. The architecture has been designed so that an AI model such as Google Gemini can be integrated in the future to provide richer summaries and more context-aware legal explanations.
Challenges we ran into
As our first full-stack project, we faced a range of practical challenges beyond writing code. We worked through Git branching and merge conflicts, organized the project structure, managed dependencies, configured deployment, and connected the frontend with the backend. Solving these issues gave us valuable experience with version control, testing, and iterative development in a real-world software workflow.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Accomplishments that we're proud of 1) Built a working end-to-end web application. 2) Simplified everyday legal agreements into user-friendly insights. 3) Developed a backend capable of identifying potentially risky clauses and privacy concerns. 4) Designed the application with a modular architecture that is ready for future AI integration.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we gained hands-on experience with:
1) Full-stack web development 2) REST APIs using Express 3) Git and collaborative development workflows 4) Backend deployment 5) Rule-based text analysis for legal documents 6) Designing software around a real user problem rather than just implementing features
What's next for VoiceMyRights
We plan to expand VoiceMyRights with:
1) Integration of Google Gemini for context-aware legal summaries 2) Browser extensions to analyze agreements before accepting them 3) More advanced legal risk detection using AI 4) Personalized recommendations based on user preferences 5) Support for multiple languages to improve accessibility
