Inspiration

Our project started with the thought that our elderly loved ones, who cared for us when we were young, deserve the same care and attention as they age. We saw that many seniors feel lonely and struggle with managing daily tasks like taking medication or keeping appointments. This sparked our idea to build an AI companion that can help them feel connected and supported.

What it does

VoiceCare is a friendly AI that talks with seniors and helps manage their daily routines. It reminds them to take their medication, helps set up appointments, offers fun conversations and even gives quick weather updates. In case of emergencies, it can alert caregivers with a simple voice command. In short, it keeps our elders company and helps them stay safe.

How we built it

We built VoiceCare using a mix of modern tools and technologies. Our system uses:

  • Voice Processing & Speech Recognition: Powered by Eleven Labs to make the conversation feels natural.
  • Communication: Twilio helps send quick SMS alerts in emergencies.
  • User Interface: We used Next.js, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS to create a simple and friendly design.
  • Deployment: Vercel is powering our VoiceCare Engine.

By combining these technologies, we made a tool that listens, understands, and responds to the needs of seniors.

Challenges we ran into

During development, we faced several challenges:

  • Making it Simple: Designing a system that is easy for seniors to use required extra care in both language and interface design.
  • Voice Accuracy: Ensuring the voice recognition works well, even when speech is slow or soft, was difficult.
  • Integration Issues: Combining different APIs (for voice, SMS, and weather) required a lot of testing and fine-tuning.
  • Reliability: Building a tool that seniors can depend on, especially during emergencies, was our top priority and a significant challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have built a working MVP that:

  • Successfully integrates multiple technologies into one easy-to-use platform.
  • Provides clear and friendly voice interactions tailored for elderly users.
  • Offers real-time medication reminders, appointment scheduling, and emergency alerts.
  • Opens up a new way to use AI for meaningful social good.

What we learned

Working on VoiceCare taught us many lessons:

  • User-Centered Design: We learned the importance of designing with the end user in mind, especially when that user may need extra care and simplicity.
  • Teamwork & Persistence: Overcoming technical and integration challenges required us to work closely and keep testing new ideas.
  • Technology’s Impact: We saw first-hand how modern AI tools can improve the lives of people who are often overlooked.
  • Feedback is Key: Early user feedback helped us refine our approach and make the system more intuitive.

What's next for VoiceCare: AI Companion for Elderly

Looking forward, we plan to:

  • Expand Features: Add more personalized interactions and additional services like health tracking and more language options.
  • Improve Accessibility: Continue refining the voice interface to better serve users with different needs.
  • User Testing: Bring in more seniors for real-world testing to make sure VoiceCare truly meets their needs.
  • Secure Integrations: Strengthen the emergency alert system and other critical features to ensure maximum reliability.
  • VoiceCare is on a journey to make our elders feel valued and connected, and we're excited to keep improving it for the future.
