I have a visually impaired friend. When I asked her what she eventually wanted to be in life, in terms of her career, her response was always "Aarna, how can I work?" This seemed unfair as she was as capable as the rest of the class, topping each test and working equally hard. This sparked my idea for Voice Your Ability. It is a non-profit organization aiming to promote employability for differently-abled people.
I created an application that helps visually impaired people build resumes. It is in a question-and-answer format and uses conversational AI techniques, hence making it easy to use. They do not need to click even a single button.
I assumed that once I complied with the code, I would have created a successful solution. However, when I tested the application on visually impaired people, there were other problems such as - answering the questions in English, stammering creating a typo, and the speed at which the questions were moving. Hence, I added multilingual capabilities and adjusted the timings between each question.
I am still proud of the work I have done. It is the smile on their faces when they finally come across an application specially designed for them that motivates me to further my passion for Voice Your Ability.
Throughout this process, I have learnt to think outside the box and understand the importance of trial and error. I have created over 20 resumes for differently-abled people. Now, I wish to further this organization to the next level, bringing smiles to more people's faces, broadening access to this technology to a larger audience and creating more resumes.
