Inspiration
The inspiration first came from an article written by one of our team members. The idea from the article was to give voice and choice to eleven secondary school girls in physical education, to try increase participation. The concept saw a significant increase in participation and enjoyment hence, the idea to project this on a much larger scale to different schools.
What it does
VCM aims to give students a voice and choice on activities or sports they would like to take part in within their PE curriculum:
- VCM provides schools a platform to give students a choice on what sport they want to do each term
- Students work through several drop-down questions (this could be done during tutorial) e.g. what sports would you like to do in PE? Give your top three choices…
- Responses will then be sent to the school and different groups will be made, teachers create lessons according to students responses
- Classes that PE teachers do not feel confident delivering will be offered by VCM via live video/pre-recoded videos
- The aim of VCM is to create positive PE experiences for students so they can continue participation once leaving school
How we built it
At this particular stage we are still in the process of designing our project. We aim to create a website (and/or an app) and a platform hosting a variety of videos.
Challenges we ran into
The challenges we have ran into at this stage has been figuring out where the funding would come from and how much funding schools will have to put into this idea.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the idea that we have come up with, it is unique and something we are all passionate about. Our aim was to produce something different, something that is not out there already and also something that would lead to increased participation in physical education and sport from a young age. VCM will make physical education more personalised and give students the voice.
What we learned
Throughout the first stage (discovery) we learnt and did a lot of research on ways to increase participation in PE. From what we have gathered, the poor experiences that students encounter in PE have meant they do not take part in any physical activity or sport once leaving school. We also found out that when giving students a voice and choice, they are more likely to participate and enjoy PE. This app aims to counterattack both issues.
What's next for Voice, Choice, Movement
VCM is still very much at the developing stage. We have got our concept sorted; however, we now need to see how this will run, we are aiming to pilot this idea in the autumn term with UEL students. We also need to create a stable platform where students can make their choice. We aim to go into secondary schools and promote and receive feedback on the idea.
