Inspiration
When trying to come up with an invention that could have a positive impact, me and my teammates immediately thought of the most recent ( and rather turbulent ) United States presidential election. While it's general knowledge that this election had the highest voter turn-out in US election history, only 67% of Americans actually even voted. Seeing this as a major problem for the United States and the many other countries around the world, my teammates and I knew we had to come up with a solution. This solution comes in the form of the app we designed, named VOGO.
What it does
VOGO is a mobile app that streamlines the oftentimes complicated voting process for people around the world. The app first uses the user's smartphone to acquire it's GPS location, which, after the user verifies the location, will allow for the app to generate all of the essential information to enable our users to vote. This includes voter registration information, polling locations, the dates of the upcoming elections, and even summarized information about each candidate. The mobile app will gather this information by utilizing the websites already available to the public, but streamlining this same information into a more comprehensive page. The app also provides links and resources should our users require more information. Overall, VOGO's mission is to streamline the voting process to ensure that elections are representative of as much of the population as possible.
How we built it
The prototype of this app was made using Figma, an app design application. Despite our complete lack of experience with the software, we felt as though Figma offered the tools necessary to provide a glimpse of what VOGO could one day look like.
Challenges we ran into
As mentioned previously, none of the members of our team had any prior experience with Figma, so much of our early development was a long series of trial and errors. There were also many discussions regarding disagreements being had about how to make the information as accessible as possible, but compromises were ultimately always reached.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As far as our accomplishments go, our team is extremely proud of the concept itself. Seeing as voting is extremely important in many countries around the world, having an app like VOGO that could provide this necessary information in a simple, streamlined manner, is not only feasible, but extremely desired in an increasingly digitalized age. We're also proud of learning how to use Figma in order to construct a working demo that shows exactly how the app would work.
What we learned
As a whole, our team learned a variety of lessons along the way. This includes the previously provided information that we had to learn how utilize Figma, the app development software that we chose to use for VOGO. Our team also got a glimpse into the many conversations and considerations that must go into the app and website development process in order to optimize the user experience.
What's next for VOGO - Voting Made Easy
The next step for our app VOGO would be to actually take the framework provided by the Figma prototype and utilize it to create a fully functional app that could request the user's location regardless of where they are in the world, as well as generate the information provided in this demo regardless of election, candidate, or country.
