Our Story — VocaLens AI
💡 What Inspired Us
Speaking well is not only about knowing what to say. The way we speak — our pace, pauses, filler words, clarity, fluency, and delivery — can completely change how our message is understood.
We noticed that most speech-feedback tools give a general score or tell users that their speech needs improvement, but they often don't clearly explain what went wrong, when it happened, or how to fix it.
That inspired us to build VocaLens AI, an AI-powered speech analytics platform designed to make speech improvement more measurable, explainable, and actionable.
Our core idea was simple:
“Find the Flaw. Fix the Moment.”
🛠️ How We Built It
VocaLens AI was designed around the challenge of Contrastive Speech Analytics & Temporal Flaw Grounding.
The system takes a user's speech recording and processes it through multiple stages:
Speech Input → Audio Processing → Speech-to-Text → Speech Analysis → Temporal Flaw Detection → Rubric Scoring → Personalized Feedback
We built the backend using Python and Flask, with audio-processing libraries such as Librosa, SoundFile, NumPy, and SciPy.
The platform analyzes important speaking characteristics such as:
- Clarity
- Speaking pace
- Fluency
- Pauses and silence
- Filler words
- Vocal delivery
Instead of providing only an overall score, VocaLens AI also identifies where a problem occurred in the speech. For example, a user can see that their speech became too fast at a particular timestamp or that a long pause occurred at a specific moment.
We also created a custom contrastive dataset containing examples of ideal and flawed speech patterns. This allows the system to compare speaking behavior and generate more meaningful feedback.
For transcription, we designed the system to support local speech recognition using Faster-Whisper, helping keep the workflow suitable for privacy-focused and local processing.
Finally, we created an interactive dashboard where users can view their overall score, rubric breakdown, timeline-based flaws, transcript, and recommendations.
📚 What We Learned
Building VocaLens AI taught us that effective AI is not just about generating a prediction — it is about making the prediction understandable and useful to the user.
We learned how to:
- Process and analyze speech audio.
