Inspiration
My daughter was preparing for the 11+ Grammar School exams in the UK, which place a strong emphasis on vocabulary skills. She needed to memorize words, along with their synonyms and antonyms. I realized this challenge wasn't unique to her — many students preparing for the 11+, GRE, or any exam that tests vocabulary face the same struggle. That inspired me to create an app that helps anyone build and retain their vocabulary more effectively.
What it does
Vocablog is a vocabulary tracker that automatically saves every word you look up, along with easy-to-understand meanings, synonyms, antonyms, and example sentences suitable for young learners. It also includes flashcard games and quiz features to help reinforce learning. Users can review, discard, or test themselves on saved words anytime.
How we built it
This project was built using bolt.new for rapid AI-assisted coding, with integrations to Supabase for database management and Stripe for handling payments. Special thanks to the team at StackBlitz for coming up with this hackathon.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was translating my vision into a functional product. I knew exactly what I wanted the app to do, but figuring out how to implement it, especially with new tools and integrations, was initially overwhelming.
Accomplishments we're proud of
The app is now ready, and the best part — my daughter will be using it to prepare for her exams! Knowing that it can help her and potentially many other students makes this project truly meaningful.
What we learned
Building web apps is more accessible than ever, thanks to AI tools like bolt.new. With the right resources, turning an idea into reality can be surprisingly fast.
What's next for Vocablog
Our next goal is to bring Vocablog to a wider audience. We plan to add more features, enhance user experience, and help as many students as possible improve their vocabulary with ease.
