Inspiration

We wanted to create a tool that helps children reflect on their day in a meaningful way while simultaneously building their writing and vocabulary skills. With so many concerns around AI being used to replace student effort, we envisioned an AI buddy that supports learning by encouraging self-expression, offering constructive feedback, and gently enhancing vocabulary without taking over the writing process.

What it does

Vocab Vault is a digital journaling platform where children can:

  • Write about their day in their own words.
  • Receive a warm, encouraging response from an AI buddy.
  • Get personalized vocabulary suggestions based on their writing.
  • See a final, revised version of their journal entry that integrates new words while preserving their original voice.

How we built it

Built using React for the front and backend (javascript, html, and css), Gemini AI for 'AI Buddy' response and vocabulary suggestions/revisions , and Firebase to store past journal entries.

Challenges we ran into

Challenges included keeping the UI simple yet engaging for young users was a design challenge as well as using netlify to run everything off of our custom domain typewithmeshawty.study

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a working prototype that encourages kids to write and revise without feeling like “homework” as well as demonstrating how AI can be a learning partner, not a replacement.

What we learned

We learned that AI can support learning ethically and effectively if we define its role carefully.

What's next for Vocab Vault

In the future we can add a progress tracker to show vocabulary growth over time and introduce voice-to-text journaling to support younger kids or early writers.
