Inspiration 🌷

Our group is seeing a growing concern for environmental issues, especially the amount of waste and plastic building up in our communities. Garbage maintenance has become a serious challenge, as overflowing bins, plastic waste, and everyday litter not only harm our environment but also make our shared spaces less welcoming and healthy.

What it does 🌱

Fleurish is a web application that combines an affordable camera hardware detection component for neighborhoods to engage with their respective communities through a plant-based gamified virtual experience that encourages sustainable environmental habits.

How we built it šŸ§‘ā€šŸ’»

Our team's tech stack:

  • Front-End - React, Tailwindcss
  • Back-End - MongoDB, Express.js
  • Hardware - ESP32, YoloV8 Vision model

Challenges we ran into 🚩

In all honesty, our greatest challenge was coming up with a feasible idea that uniquely satisfies the prompts this year. We also ran into some difficulties with the database, as we chose a tech stack that wasn't the most suitable for our application's database. Due to time constraints, we had to work through the problems that were presented as is even though switching would have been much easier; it was just not feasible in the tight time frame.

Accomplishments that we're proud of šŸ’Ŗ

An accomplishment that our team is proud of is that this is our first time integrating hardware into a hackathon submission. We are especially proud of this since it was difficult coming up with a project idea that satisfies the prompt while using both hardware and software components.

What we learned šŸ¤“

A majority of our team had no prior experience using Arduino and implementing hardware components, so there was a lot of learning involving everything related to that. However, it was really cool to see these physical components connect and work as we intended from our initial planning.

What's next for VMAS - The Pals - Fleurish šŸ”®

We want to expand further to not only be limited to cleaning up garbage but also to overall community tasks such as having users be able to make their own requests on the community board and others can accept these tasks. This not only creates greater incentive but also encourages connection and inclusivity amongst each community.
