The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated mental health crises worldwide, leaving countless individuals feeling isolated, anxious, and unable to express themselves safely. Amidst these challenges, the concept for viZen was born: a digital companion offering 24/7 support, akin to the unwavering presence of a compassionate sibling. Our aim was to create a safe, encrypted space where users could freely share their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment, receiving the kind of understanding and advice that might not be as readily available from their immediate social circles.

What It Does

viZen is a mental health chatbot designed to provide personalized, empathetic advice to those in need. By engaging users in human-like conversations, viZen offers a comforting presence that listens, understands, and guides. Key features include the ability to discern when a user might benefit from professional counseling, effectively reducing the burden on mental health professionals by filtering out individuals seeking casual conversation from those in urgent need of care. This ensures that resources are allocated more efficiently, providing targeted support to those who need it most.

How We Built It

Our team leveraged the latest advancements in large language models (LLMs) and GPT technology to create viZen. We conducted extensive research, including surveys and interviews with potential users and mental health professionals, to understand the nuances of empathetic communication. This foundational work informed our development process, enabling us to design a chatbot that not only mimics human conversation but does so with the depth of understanding necessary for mental health support.

Challenges We Ran Into

One of the main challenges was ensuring that the advice provided by viZen remained general and supportive, without crossing into territory that could be considered life-altering or requiring professional judgment. Additionally, distinguishing between users in need of different levels of support—those seeking a listening ear versus those requiring urgent intervention—presented a complex problem that required careful consideration and testing.
