Concept

For blind people traveling is still something that is not easily done independently. The current condition of the blind people still use sticks as tools to recognize the surrounding environment over short distances. Therefore, requires a technology to help make it easier for blind people in their activities. Inspired from visual aids of one of the crew of the USS Enterprise. Viz is shaped glasses smart technology that helps the blind to see obstacles or barriers a few meters in front of him.

What it does

Viz is a device that serves as a visual aid and sensors to help users who suffer from vision loss.Viz helps users through a number of sensors implanted. By using an ultrasonic sensor helps the user to recognize the environment in which it is located.

UX Design

Viz is designed as spectacles with one button located at the top right of the glasses that serves to provide information on the time and conditions of dark or light.

Viz very easy to use just like using a regular glasses that have been equipped with sensors to detect obstacles or hurdles with a notification beep and release information how within these constraints.

How It works

Viz detect obstacles by issuing a beep at a distance of 1-3 meters, the closer the user with obstacles then a beep will be faster. Provide information within the existing barriers in front of the user. Provide time information along with dark or bright ambient conditions.

How we built it

Viz built with ultrasonic sensor and photoresistor sensors embedded in the microcontroller Arduino UNO R3 and embedded module also real-time clock (RTC) to inform time. And using Arduino IDE editor to upload the program to Arduino UNO R3 via USB cable.

Others

Challenges we ran into

The accuracy of the sensor measurement results compared to the real state of the environment in which users are located. Analog pins of arduino insufficient from the sensor to be used. Photoresistor only covers the resolution of 1024 bits.

With Viz we can help people who have lost eyesight or who were born without sight to be able to recognize the surrounding environment.

What's next for Viz

Viz will be equipped with sensors to better recognize the environment around them:

  1. recognize the danger factor that comes from fire and smoke
  2. identify the location of the height of its user
  3. recognize the magnitude of temperature and humidity
  4. recognize the north and south poles
  5. recognizes the movement speed of the user --- for speeds that are considered dangerous
  6. Quick phone call
  7. Integrated with internet
  8. Provide range hurdles information with sound.
  9. GPS Tracking Information
