Inspiration
Our teammate Fathima Shirin A S developed the idea, and that too in a situation of period cramps. While she was having her period cramps, and going through severe pain a thought crossed her mind, about an app with complete menstrual items, doctor consultation, talks on menstruation that works to remove the taboo on menstruation. This single thought was the beginning of our idea. Then we thought more about this and finally built our product.
What it does
VIVA LA VULVA is an end to end service-based mobile application for women. We are a women-only team and we know the difficulties we face much more than anyone and thus came up with this idea. In developing countries, women’s choices of menstrual hygiene materials are often limited by the costs, availability and social norms. We eliminate the need for multiple applications for women as all needed services are available in a single platform and more features can be added on user's request. Our app offers many features like a complete menstrual store which offers all products related to menstrual hygiene, a period calculator which notifies them 4-5 days before their date, virtual primary healthcare services from the comfort of your home with built-in video conferencing facilities and thus not compromising on your health. Users could connect with doctors via a live video, audio, or chat according to their preference which saves both time and money and provides a much easier and friendly platform for girls to consult their gynaecologists which otherwise they are reluctant to do so, Safety Mode which sends text messages to their close persons with the use of voice commands which even works when the screen is off. We also provide a discussion forum for women where they could discuss their problems and find persons of similar problems and interests. We also provide health tips and news, monthly talks and sessions and much more features to be added. In future, we are planning to provide franchise outlets, so that more women could come into the field of entrepreneurship and also provide more delivery jobs to women and empower them. Our target customers are women and girls in the age group of 10 - 60 years.
How we built it
First, through various brainstorming and online meetings we gave our idea a basic structure. Then we divided the work among each other, some dealt with the UI, some coding part, some writing the contents. We used the live share feature in vscode to work together. We made a team project in Figma so that all could work on it and make necessary changes. We used Google Meet for brainstorming and meetings. Constant Communication made this project possible.
Challenges we ran into
We felt a lack of time. We all have worked hard and did our best. Almost all among us were beginners and this was our first hackathon. We took time in fixing our idea and couldn't complete the whole thing. Creating an app that gets noticed, making the app interactive, promoting and marketing are some other challenges. We may also have to face many challenges in future like defying social expectations, building a support network, constant support from Government and other Organisations for funding, balancing work and family life etc.
Accomplishments that we're proud
“Being a woman is magical but hard at the same time. And we strive to make it easier By our initiative: VIVA LA VULVA. That means two things: “one, online customers enjoy a flawless user experience tailored to their needs and interests, a place where they are comfortable, somewhere they feel belonged.” and two: “our clients get little packages of love curated carefully, a little something from our side to support you and to bring a smile on your face.”
🌸Comfortable - Approachable - Plethora of menstrual products all under one roof - expert consultation - efficient and fast delivery, when u need it the most - run by girls for girls #women empowerment - Connecting women together 🌸
Through this idea we could: . Break taboos surrounding menstruation, raise awareness of the importance of good menstrual hygiene management worldwide . Catalyze a growing, global movement that recognizes and supports girls' and women’s rights and build partnerships among those partners on a national and local level. . Let women know that they are valued and cared for and we are all together in this. Each care package curated with utmost care and packed with a lot of love.
What we learned
The things we learnt were innumerable. We never thought that we could learn in such a short time. Firstly, we learnt what is a hackathon and it was a really great learning journey in a short period of time. We learnt the basics of Figma, Flutter, Firebase and heard about many new things. The experience of working remotely as a team was something new to us and gave a lot of insights.
What's next for Viva La Vulva
Once the app is successful franchise applications will begin. We will be adding more features according to users request. We think of adding Menstruation related disease prediction using Machine Learning and alert them so that they could consult a doctor. We had to hire digital marketing interns and have to form a team. We are promoting more women and LGBTQ into the entrepreneurship field and trying to empower them.
