Mesa #26 - Voladores de Papantla - Vitifolio DB
Inspiration
Enrique's cousin enrolled in a Sommelier class last year. Since then, he has been very interested in collecting different types of wines in his cellar, he is fascinated by it, he likes it so much that he has overall 50 different region/variety combination of wines and around 200 bottles. He usually has to be He wants to visualize it in a computer, to keep track of the different wines he has.
What it does
Keeps a list of wines in a cellar. It also displays different information like their Name, ID (Position in the cellar), region, variety and year of wine. The ID may be a stored as a number or a hexadecimal value as well.
How we built it
We built this application using Java to program the backend and used JavaFX to program the front end. It was a little tedious at first, however it was the programming language that all the team shared since all team members learned to use Java and JavaFX in our Highshool's honors programming class.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into some typical challenges made by lack of documentation, but we where able to come through them once it was finished. We also were challenged by time itself since we weren't able to get an idea until the very end we were able to come to this idea around halfway of the hackathon 13 hours have passed. Some team members were needed to refresh the mind of others on the Java and JavaFX documentation yet we still were able to finish on time something to demo.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of actually finish something to demo in the hackathon, specially since we wasted lots of time on finding an idea. We were proud that the application was functional, and that bugs were not found thanks to all this try and catches as well as all those exceptions stated in the application's source code.
What we learned
We learned more on how to work under pressure as well as some more efficient implementations to save data and objects than actually layers considering time efficiency on finishing programming it yet it may not be as efficient computer-wise.
What's next for Vitifolio DB
Vitifolio DB maybe right now is a very small project, but it definitely has much more potential, we were initially going to program in android but we ran to some installation problems with Android Studio and the lack of knowledge to achieve a very ambitious GUI as well as some lack of time. So the future should be to implement it as a web and mobile app that can capture the data by taking a picture as well as also saving those pictures and using available data to add best expected year to drink, overall points on cellar communities and so much more.
